8. DIY Essential Oil Diffuser Ornaments

These small ornaments serve double duty: they look lovely hanging in a car, closet, or on a Christmas tree, and they release a subtle scent when you add a few drops of essential oil. They are quick to make and perfect for friends who enjoy aromatherapy or for family members who appreciate handmade decorations.
Materials: Air-dry clay or salt dough; small cookie cutters; a straw or skewer to poke a hole; acrylic paint or stamps; ribbon or twine; essential oils (lavender, orange, peppermint); a small dropper bottle.
Instructions: Roll out the clay or salt dough to about a quarter-inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Poke a hole near the top of each shape with a straw. Let the shapes dry completely—this can take 24 to 48 hours for air-dry clay, or a few hours in a low oven for salt dough. Once dry, paint or stamp designs on them. Thread a ribbon through the hole and tie a loop. To use, add two or three drops of essential oil to the unpainted back side of the ornament. The scent will last for several days and can be refreshed.
Time: 30 minutes of hands-on work plus drying time. Difficulty: Beginner.
Customization: Choose shapes that match the recipient’s interests—a paw print for a dog lover, a coffee cup for a caffeine enthusiast, a star for a holiday decoration. Use paint colors that coordinate with their home.
Display suggestion: Hang one in a car, place one in a linen closet, or tie one to a gift bag as a decorative tag.
Helpful tip: If you want a stronger scent, add a few drops of oil to the clay before drying, then refresh later with more oil.
