7. CD Mosaic Decorative Trays
In the digital streaming age, compact discs and DVD media have largely become obsolete. Millions of old music CDs, promotional discs, and scratched movies sit in boxes gathering dust, waiting for a trip to the landfill. The brilliant iridescent coating on the underside of compact discs makes them a fantastic, free substitute for expensive glass tiles in mosaic crafts.
Transforming old discs into a shimmering mosaic tray begins with safety gear, as cutting plastic requires eye protection and sturdy kitchen shears. Cut the CDs into small triangles, squares, and organic shards. The holographic foil layer will catch and reflect light in dazzling rainbow hues. Take an ordinary wooden serving tray, a picture frame, or a plain flower pot and sand the surface lightly to ensure good adhesion. Apply a thick layer of craft glue or tile adhesive across the surface, and carefully press the CD mosaic pieces into place, leaving small uniform grout lines between each shard. Once the adhesive cures fully, apply a contrasting dark or light grout over the surface to fill the gaps, wipe away excess haze with a damp cloth, and seal it for a dazzling statement piece.
