3. No-Sew T-Shirt Tote Bags

3
If you have old t-shirts that are too worn for donation but too loved to throw away, this is the project for you. With nothing more than scissors, you can turn a t-shirt into a reusable tote bag in under ten minutes.

Materials: A t-shirt with little to no side seams, scissors, and optionally fabric paint or iron-on patches for decoration.

Instructions: Lay the t-shirt flat and cut off both sleeves along the seam. Cut a wide U-shape across the neckline to form the bag opening. Then cut strips along the bottom hem, about an inch wide and three inches long. Tie the top strip to the bottom strip across the width of the shirt, then repeat with the next pair, working your way across. Once you’ve tied all the strips together, flip the bag inside out, and the knots will be hidden on the inside. You now have a soft, stretchy tote that’s perfect for groceries, library books, or beach days.

Time: About 10 minutes.

Difficulty: Beginner-friendly and great for kids with supervision.

Customization: Decorate with fabric paint, tie-dye, or patches to give each bag its own personality.

Helpful tip: Choose a t-shirt that’s slightly larger than you think you need. Tighter shirts make for smaller bags, and cotton does stretch over time when carrying heavier items.
