3. DIY Floating Rope Shelves

Floating shelves are excellent for displaying small houseplants, books, and decorative trinkets, but commercial shelving units can be surprisingly pricey. You can easily build your own rustic, bohemian-inspired hanging shelves using inexpensive scrap wood and thick cotton or jute rope. This project requires minimal woodworking skills and adds a warm, organic texture to your walls.
To construct a rope shelf, cut a piece of pine board to your desired length and drill a hole near each of the four corners. Sand the wood smooth and apply a coat of wood stain or acrylic paint to match your room’s color palette. Thread the rope through the holes, securing the underside of each board with a sturdy, decorative knot. Hang the shelf from a heavy-duty metal hook or a decorative wooden peg anchored securely into the wall. The natural drape of the rope combined with the warmth of the wood creates an eye-catching display unit.
