6. Painted Thrift Store Lamps

Lighting can completely change the mood of a bedroom, and table lamps are an easy place to upgrade. Thrift stores, garage sales, and Facebook Marketplace are full of dated lamps in desperate need of a second chance. A little paint can transform them into modern statement pieces.
Look for lamps with interesting shapes, even if the color or finish is less than appealing. Ceramic bases in simple geometric forms work beautifully in modern spaces. Clean the lamp thoroughly, lightly sand the surface, and apply two to three thin coats of chalk paint or matte spray paint in your chosen color.
Modern color choices include soft black, warm white, terracotta, sage green, or a buttery yellow. Once the paint is fully dry, swap out the shade for something simple in linen or natural paper. A basic drum shade in white or cream can be found affordably online and instantly makes the lamp feel intentional.
Time required: a couple of hours including dry time, often done in stages. Difficulty: beginner-friendly. Cost: usually under $20 for the lamp, paint, and new shade combined. This is one of the most rewarding budget bedroom projects because the transformation is so dramatic.
