7. DIY Modern Headboard

A headboard anchors the whole bedroom, but custom ones can cost a small fortune. You can build a sleek, modern headboard yourself in an afternoon with just a few basic supplies. The most popular budget-friendly option is the classic padded channel design seen in high-end hotels.

For this project, you’ll need a sheet of plywood cut to your desired size (typically wider than the bed frame), foam padding, batting, and your choice of upholstery fabric. Cut the foam to match the plywood, then wrap everything in batting to soften the edges. Stretch your fabric tightly over the top and staple it to the back of the plywood.

To create the channeled look, use a ruler to mark evenly spaced vertical lines, then press in buttons or staples at each marking to create subtle indents. Secure the whole piece to the wall using a French cleat or heavy-duty mounting strips.

If the channeled design feels too involved, you can skip the tufting and create a clean, flat upholstered headboard in a neutral linen or boucle fabric. Both versions look expensive and custom.

Time required: three to four hours. Difficulty: intermediate. Cost: usually $60 to $100 depending on fabric choice, which is a fraction of the cost of a comparable store-bought headboard. This is a project that pays off every single time you walk into the room.
