9. Macramé Wall Hanging

9
Macramé is having a major moment, and it’s one of the most accessible fiber crafts for beginners. Even if you’ve never touched a piece of rope, you can create a beautiful wall hanging in an afternoon. The soft, textural quality of macramé balances out the clean lines of modern furniture perfectly.

Start with a piece of cotton macramé cord, which you can find at any craft store. Cut about 30 to 40 pieces of cord to your desired length, fold them in half, and attach them to a wooden dowel using a lark’s head knot. From there, the entire piece is built using just a few basic knots: the square knot, the half hitch, and the berry knot.

YouTube is filled with beginner-friendly tutorials that walk you through simple patterns step by step. Start with a basic design and let yourself experiment as you build confidence. Adding wooden beads, fringe, or a piece of driftwood can give the piece a more polished look.

Time required: two to four hours depending on size. Difficulty: beginner-friendly with a little patience. Cost: usually under $20 for materials, which is significantly less than buying a similar piece from a home decor store. Hang your finished piece above the bed, in a reading nook, or over a dresser.
