2. Minimalist Air Dry Clay Pinch Pots

2

Air dry clay is an incredibly versatile and forgiving medium that allows you to experience the therapeutic benefits of pottery without needing an expensive kiln. Pinch pots are the perfect introductory project for adults, yielding beautiful, organic shapes that look like they were purchased from a high-end boutique. These small vessels are perfect for holding delicate jewelry, air plants, paperclips, or small keys on an entryway console table.

To craft your own pinch pots, gather a block of premium white air dry clay, a small bowl of water, sandpaper, acrylic paints, and a clear protective varnish. Begin by breaking off a palm-sized portion of clay and rolling it into a smooth, crack-free ball. Insert your thumb into the center of the ball, pressing down until you are about a half-inch from the bottom. Gently pinch the clay walls between your thumb and fingers, rotating the ball as you go, to gradually thin and raise the sides of the pot. Keep your fingers slightly damp to smooth out any small cracks that appear in the clay. Once you are satisfied with the organic shape, let the pot dry completely on parchment paper for 24 to 48 hours, turning it occasionally. Once bone-dry, use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out rough edges or fingerprint marks. You can leave the pots natural, paint them with abstract geometric patterns, or add a metallic gold rim before sealing them with a glossy or matte varnish to protect against moisture.
