Utilizing simple knotting techniques and natural cotton cord, you can create intricate, textured wall art that adds warmth and dimension to any room. This craft is highly meditative, as the repetitive hand movements help quiet the mind while allowing you to watch a beautiful geometric pattern emerge from simple strings.
To get started, you will need a sturdy wooden dowel or a piece of natural driftwood gathered from a local beach, some 4mm or 5mm single-strand cotton macrame cord, and sharp scissors. Hang your dowel at eye level using S-hooks on a clothing rack or back of a chair to make working easier. Cut several equal lengths of cord, typically about four to five times the desired length of your finished piece. Attach the cords to the dowel using a basic Lark’s Head knot. From there, you can build your design using two fundamental knots: the Square Knot and the Double Half Hitch. By alternating these knots, you can create gorgeous diamond patterns, textured waves, and elegant fringed edges.
