7. Tension Rod Inside Cabinets

7
Tension rods are an underused tool in bathroom storage. Mounted horizontally inside a cabinet, they create an instant hanging bar for spray bottles, hair tools, and small baskets. The tension mechanism means no drilling and no commitment, which is perfect for renters or anyone who likes to reconfigure their space often.

You can buy basic tension rods at any home improvement or dollar store, in lengths ranging from about ten inches to thirty inches. Choose a rod with rubber ends to prevent slipping and to protect the inside of the cabinet. The cost is usually around five to ten dollars per rod.

Install the rod by twisting it to the desired length and wedging it into place inside the cabinet. For a hanging bar, mount the rod vertically from the top of the cabinet to hold a bottle of hairspray by its nozzle. For a horizontal divider, mount it across the width of the cabinet to hang small caddies or baskets.

This is one of the fastest and cheapest upgrades you can make. It takes about five minutes per rod, requires no tools, and can be repositioned whenever your storage needs change. It’s a wonderful example of how a tiny change can make a big difference in a small space.

Use vertical tension rods to separate tall bottles and prevent them from tipping over. You can also hang small wire baskets from a horizontal rod to create a second tier of storage inside a deep cabinet. The baskets can hold washcloths, hair ties, or travel-sized products.

A common mistake is choosing a rod that’s slightly too long. If the tension is too tight, the rod can bow in the middle over time. Aim for a snug fit without forcing the rod, and check the rubber ends periodically to make sure they’re not leaving marks on the cabinet walls.
