2. Tension Rod Dividers for Cabinets and Under-Sink Storage

2
Tension rods are inexpensive, removable, and surprisingly powerful in small apartments. They can divide a wide cabinet into zones, create a second shelf under the sink, or keep cleaning bottles from toppling over. This is one of the quickest DIY small space organization ideas for apartments because it requires no tools and no permanent changes.

Materials: tension rods in various lengths, measuring tape, small plastic bins, optional shelf riser.

Instructions: Measure the inside of your cabinet or under-sink area. Choose tension rods that fit snugly without bending. Twist the rod to extend it, then place it horizontally to separate tall bottles from short items. For a second tier, use a wire shelf riser or a small basket suspended between two rods, but keep the weight light.

Time: 10–20 minutes. Difficulty: Beginner.

In a kitchen, use tension rods to corral cutting boards, baking sheets, and pot lids. In a bathroom, they can hold cleaning sprays and sponges under the sink. In a closet, a tension rod can create a second hanging row for scarves or camisoles. Customize with color-matched rods or add small adhesive hooks to the rod for hanging brushes.

Helpful tip: Avoid placing tension rods where they will be bumped often, such as a cabinet door that swings hard. Check them monthly and retighten as needed. If your cabinets have a glossy finish, use rubber end caps to prevent scratches.
