4. Overflowing Mum Planters

Mums are the workhorse of fall decorating — they bloom exactly when you need color, and they look fuller every week. Planting them in galvanized metal tubs or baskets gives your porch that farmhouse charm without any crafting at all.

For the fullest look, pack three plants into each container and mix colors: burgundy, gold, and rust together look richer than a single shade. Add ornamental kale or trailing ivy around the edges for extra texture.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 galvanized planters or large baskets
  • 6 mum plants in mixed fall colors
  • 2 ornamental kale or ivy plants
  • Potting soil

How to Make

  1. Fill each planter two-thirds full with potting soil.
  2. Place three mums in a triangle, tallest in the middle.
  3. Tuck kale or ivy around the edges.
  4. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom.
