9. Macramé Christmas Tree Wall Hanging

If you want something that feels a little more modern than a traditional wreath, a small macramé tree is worth the effort. You need cotton macramé cord, a short dowel or driftwood branch, sharp scissors, and a few wooden beads. The pattern is built from simple square knots worked in decreasing rows so the shape tapers into a triangle.
Start by attaching cords to the dowel with lark’s head knots, then work your rows, skipping the outer cords at the start of each new row to create the taper. Add beads as “ornaments” near the bottom, and finish with a fringe trim. Hang it from a leather loop or a length of cord.
Time: 1.5 to 2 hours. Difficulty: moderate — a good first macramé project if you have watched a basic square knot tutorial. Undo mistakes freely; the cord holds up to re-knotting.
