4. Modern Geometric Painted Wood Shims

4
Wood shims are inexpensive utility items found in the plumbing or door sections of any hardware store, but their natural wedge shape makes them incredibly versatile for creating geometric, mid-century modern wall art. By arranging these wooden pieces in alternating directions, you can construct a stunning three-dimensional mosaic that plays with light and shadow.

Purchase a pack of wood shims and a sturdy piece of plywood or heavy cardboard to use as your backing board. Before gluing anything down, experiment with different layout patterns, such as a classic herringbone, a chevron, or a radiating sunburst design. To add contrast, stain some of the shims with a warm wood tone, paint others in complementary accent colors, and leave a few raw. Once you have finalized your design and color palette, use strong wood glue or a hot glue gun to secure each shim to the backing board. Frame the finished piece with simple wooden trim to give it a polished, professional look that anchors your bedroom decor.
