6. Pressed Clay Botanical Relief Plaques

6
For a unique, sculptural alternative to traditional framed art, consider making pressed clay botanical relief plaques. This DIY project captures the intricate details of real leaves and flowers in solid plaster, creating beautiful, stone-like medallions that look like ancient artifacts. The subtle textures and neutral tones of the plaster make these plaques a peaceful addition to any bedroom wall.

To start, roll out a piece of air-dry clay or non-hardening modeling clay into a flat slab about half an inch thick. Press fresh leaves, ferns, or flowers firmly into the clay to leave a deep, clear impression, then gently peel the plants away. Place a cardboard ring or a cookie cutter around the impression to act as a mold. Mix plaster of Paris according to the package instructions and pour it carefully over the clay mold. Before the plaster fully hardens, insert a small wire loop or a paperclip into the back to serve as a hanger. Once fully cured, peel away the clay to reveal a gorgeous, raised plaster replica of your botanicals. Hang them as a trio to create an elegant, organic display.
