9. Tin Can Pumpkin Lanterns

Upcycle empty tin cans into charming lanterns that glow with fall warmth. This project is best for older kids (or with adult supervision), as it involves cleaning and handling cans. The result is a cozy decoration that can be used indoors or out.
Materials: Clean, empty tin cans (soup or vegetable cans work well), orange and green tissue paper or paint, Mod Podge or diluted white glue, paintbrush, tea lights or LED candles, optional: black permanent marker, ribbon.
Instructions: Remove the labels from the cans and clean them thoroughly. If using tissue paper, tear or cut it into small pieces. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the can and let the kids stick the orange tissue paper all over, overlapping the pieces. Once dry, add a layer of Mod Podge on top to seal it. For the stem, cut a small rectangle of green tissue paper or paint the rim green. Place a tea light or LED candle inside for a safe, glowing effect. For a spookier look, use a black marker to draw jack-o’-lantern faces on the can before adding the tissue paper.
Time: 45–60 minutes (plus drying time) | Difficulty: Medium | Budget: Free (if using recycled cans)
💡 Pro Tip: To make the cans safer for little hands, sand any sharp edges with fine-grit sandpaper before starting the project.
